Hi there! I’m Sophia Yang, a newbie dedicated to learning. 🐾
As a third-year computer science student at the University of British Columbia, I am passionate about expanding my knowledge and skills within UI/UX design. I am actively seeking a meaningful internship opportunity where I can learn from industry leaders and gain hands-on experience in the tech sector. As the current UI/UX Designer for Motion UBC, my role has fueled my eagerness to contribute to innovative & modern interface designs through hackathons, pro-bono projects, or personal projects. My passion for the tech industry was ignited by my love for video games, particularly through my long hours spent playing Valorant. As I navigate my journey in gaming and design, I am eager to learn and explore the intricacies behind game development and the user interfaces that make it all possible to create a product.
My Projects
Check out my work! I've poured my creativity and passion into each project, showcasing a diverse range of design styles and concepts that reflect my unique vision.
Hevy Remake
As an avid gym-goer, I recognized the need for a more intuitive interface in the popular weightlifting tracking app, Hevy. The new design features a modern, modular layout that simplifies navigation and makes it easier for users to track their workouts efficiently. This streamlined approach not only improves accessibility but also encourages users to engage more actively with their fitness routines.

Choose-Your-Ingredients Recipe App
In my case study on user experiences with recipe apps, I identified a prevalent issue: users often lack the necessary ingredients for their desired recipes. To address this challenge, I developed an innovative app that empowers users to input the ingredients they currently have at home. By doing so, the app generates a selection of healthy recipes tailored to their available items. With intuitive design and user-friendly features, the app aims to streamline meal planning and inspire users to cook delicious, nutritious dishes without the hassle of grocery shopping. This work was awarded the Game of Apps Best Designed App Award.

BuddyStudy!
Buddystudy was created during a hackathon to tackle the common problem of student distractions while studying. The platform enables students to schedule video calls with their friends, fostering a supportive study environment. During these calls, participants are muted until the study session concludes, which encourages focus and productivity. This unique feature not only holds friends accountable but also adds an element of friendly competition, motivating students to stay on task.

Post-Secondary Guide
As I navigated the university application process, I embarked on a brief personal project aimed at simplifying the experience for fellow high school graduates. I envisioned compiling comprehensive information about Canadian universities into a single resource, making essential details easily accessible. This platform would serve as a valuable tool for students, enabling them to compare programs, understand admission requirements, and explore different majors and career paths. By bringing everything into one organized space, I hoped to alleviate some stress associated with the application process.

Leadership Experience
Motion ubc - UI/UX Designer
As a UI/UX designer at Motion UBC, I am currently engaged in a pro-bono project for the Veterans Transition Network. This initiative focuses on redesigning their resource page on the website, with the primary aim of simplifying the process for staff to add and categorize valuable resources. A key objective is to enhance the user experience, enabling veterans and their families to easily locate the resources they require. Looking ahead, we plan to integrate an AI chatbot to further improve resource discovery, providing veterans with timely assistance. This project not only aims to support our veterans but also reflects our commitment to giving back to the community through thoughtful design.
ubc k-wave - Co-President
Our club is committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for enthusiasts of K-pop, K-drama, and Korean culture, allowing members to connect and share their passion for all things Korean. In my role as the Co-President for the only Korean-entertainment club on campus, I have dedicated 10 hours each week to executive meet-ups with six portfolio members, fostering collaboration and effective decision-making. Working alongside seven other portfolios comprising of over 40 members, I successfully delegated relevant tasks to smaller teams, ensuring smooth operations. My efforts contributed to a remarkable net profit of $500+ for each event and an impressive membership increase of over 200 individuals since joining the club. I facilitated more than 30 K-culture events, attracting over 100 attendees each, averaging about two events per month. Here's a photo of my lovely executive team!
